DHL Aviation Network
DHL’s hub-and-spoke model centres on Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) for Europe — one of the largest cargo-only airports globally. Nightly sort operations connect over 60 European destinations, with intercontinental flights linking to Cincinnati (Americas), Bahrain (Middle East), and Hong Kong (Asia). This dedicated infrastructure means DHL doesn’t compete for space with passenger airlines.
Compare DHL with Airline Cargo
DHL Express offers convenience with door-to-door service, while traditional airline cargo can be more cost-effective for larger shipments. We help you find the right balance of speed and cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between DHL Express and DHL Global Forwarding?
DHL Express provides door-to-door parcel and document delivery with fixed transit times and all-inclusive pricing (customs, duties pre-arranged). DHL Global Forwarding handles larger freight shipments via air, sea, and road with more flexible pricing and options. For shipments under 100 kg, Express is often simpler; for heavier freight, Global Forwarding may offer better rates. How large is DHL’s cargo fleet?
DHL operates over 260 dedicated freighter aircraft through its subsidiaries, making it one of the world’s 3 largest cargo fleets. This includes wide-body B777F and B767F for intercontinental routes, and B757F and A300F for regional services. Is DHL cheaper than airline cargo?
For small shipments (under 50 kg), DHL Express is often competitive because it includes door-to-door pickup and delivery. For larger shipments (100+ kg), traditional airline cargo through a freight forwarder is typically 30–50% cheaper per kg, though you’ll arrange local collection and delivery separately.Does DHL offer temperature-controlled shipping?
Yes, through DHL Medical Express and DHL Global Forwarding’s temperature-controlled solutions. Options range from active containers maintaining exact temperatures to passive packaging for shorter transit times. Ideal for pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and biotech products.Disclaimer: All rates shown are approximate estimates. How pricing works when you ship with DHL Aviation
Chargeable Weight Calculation
DHL Aviation uses dimensional weight to ensure fair pricing for bulky shipments. The volumetric divisor is 6000 cm³ per kilogram. Your chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight or calculated volumetric weight.
| Example: A medical device shipment |
| Length: 80 cm | Width: 60 cm | Height: 40 cm Volumetric weight = (80 × 60 × 40) / 6000 = 32 kg Actual weight: 18 kg Chargeable weight: 32 kg (volumetric applies) |
Weight Thresholds and Pricing
DHL Aviation applies progressive rate breaks based on shipment weight. Larger shipments receive reduced per-kilogram rates:
- Up to 45 kg: Standard expedited rates
- 45–100 kg: Reduced rate tier begins
- 100–300 kg: Further reduction per kilogram
- 300–500 kg: Discounted freight rate applies
- 500–1000 kg: Volume discount tier
- Above 1000 kg: Specialized consolidated rate discussion required
What Is Included and Excluded
Included in all-in pricing: International airfreight between origin and destination hubs, fuel surcharge, security handling, and documentation processing.
Not included: Pickup from shipper location, customs clearance and duties, dangerous goods surcharge (if applicable), insurance, storage or warehousing, or special handling for temperature-controlled goods.
