How Air Freight Pricing Works

Understanding Chargeable Weight

Air freight charges apply to chargeable weight, which is whichever is greater: the actual gross weight of your shipment or its volumetric weight.

Volumetric weight accounts for the space your cargo occupies on the aircraft. To calculate it, multiply the dimensions of your shipment and divide by the volumetric divisor of 6,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram.

Chargeable Weight Formula

Volumetric weight (kg) = Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000

Chargeable weight = whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight

Worked Examples

Example 1: Electronics Shipment

Suppose you are shipping a pallet of computer monitors from Shanghai to New York.

In this case, you pay freight charges based on 400 kg because the actual weight exceeds the volumetric weight.

Example 2: Lightweight Bulky Cargo

Now consider a shipment of foam insulation from Frankfurt to Los Angeles.

Despite weighing only 50 kg, you pay freight charges on 400 kg because this light, bulky cargo occupies significant aircraft space.

What Determines Your Final Price

Your air freight rate depends on several factors beyond chargeable weight. The route you select—whether China to Europe, Asia to North America, or Europe to North America—carries different base rates. Weight thresholds affect pricing: shipments under 45 kg, between 45–100 kg, 100–300 kg, 300–500 kg, 500–1,000 kg, and over 1,000 kg each have distinct rate tables. The type of cargo also matters; hazardous materials, temperature-sensitive goods, and fragile items incur additional fees. Seasonal demand influences pricing, with peak travel seasons commanding higher rates. Finally, aircraft capacity on your route on your specific shipment date affects the final quote.

What Is Included in All-In Pricing

When you request a quote, the all-in rate typically covers base airfreight charges, fuel surcharges, and airline terminal handling fees. Most quotes also include security screening charges and basic documentation processing. Some forwarders include origin pickup services and customs clearance coordination.

What Is NOT Included

The all-in rate does not cover customs duties or import taxes at your destination. It excludes destination delivery or final-mile transport. If your cargo qualifies as dangerous goods (DG), additional DG certification and handling fees apply separately. Storage fees, demurrage charges, and any special requests such as insurance are charged on top. Some carriers charge separately for peak-season surcharges if your shipment date falls during high-demand periods.

Information You Must Provide for a Firm Quote

To receive an accurate quote, specify your shipment origin and destination cities and countries. Provide the gross weight in kilograms and the dimensions (length, width, height in centimeters) of each pallet, box, or container. Describe your cargo in detail—what product, material, or commodity it is. Indicate when you need the shipment ready for pickup. Confirm whether your shipment contains lithium batteries, hazardous materials, or other restricted items that trigger additional handling or regulatory requirements.

Why Rates Are Estimates

The spot rates you see quoted are reference points based on recent market data. Your actual price depends on real-time aircraft capacity on your chosen route and shipment date. Rates fluctuate daily with fuel costs, demand, and seasonal peaks. Always treat published indexes as orientation only—your confirmed rate will be determined by available capacity when you book.
