Frequently Asked Questions

Which airport is the busiest for air freight?

Hong Kong International (HKG) consistently ranks as the world’s busiest cargo airport by tonnage, followed by Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Incheon (ICN), Dubai (DXB), and Anchorage (ANC). In Europe, Frankfurt (FRA), Paris CDG, and Amsterdam Schiphol handle the highest volumes.

Do I need to ship from the nearest airport?

Not necessarily. For air freight, the origin airport is usually selected by your freight forwarder based on carrier availability, rates, and routing — not proximity alone. A shipment from Manchester might route through London Heathrow if a better rate or faster connection is available there.

What makes an airport a “cargo hub”?

A cargo hub has dedicated freight terminals, customs-bonded warehouses, regular freighter services, cold-chain facilities for perishables and pharma, and ground handling specialists. Major hubs like FRA, DXB, HKG and SIN process millions of tonnes annually and offer 24/7 operations.

Can I ship dangerous goods or oversized cargo from any airport?

No. Dangerous goods (DG/HAZMAT) and oversized cargo require airports with specific handling facilities and trained staff. Major hubs handle all DG classes, but smaller airports may have restrictions. Your forwarder will select an appropriate origin airport based on your cargo type.

How do transit times vary between airports?

Direct flights from major hubs offer the fastest transit (1–2 days intercontinental). Transshipment via a hub like Dubai or Singapore adds 0.5–1 day but can provide better rates and more routing options. Intra-European air freight typically takes 1–3 days door-to-door.
