### How chargeable weight is calculated

**Step 1:** Volumetric weight = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000

**Step 2:** Chargeable weight = the higher of actual vs volumetric weight

**Step 3:** Cost = chargeable weight × rate per kg + surcharges

The divisor 6,000 is the IATA standard for air freight. Some express carriers use 5,000.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What is volumetric weight?**
Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight) is calculated as: Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000. It represents how much space your cargo occupies in an aircraft, regardless of actual weight.

**Why do airlines use chargeable weight?**
Aircraft have both weight limits and space limits. Light but bulky cargo takes up valuable space without adding much weight. Chargeable weight ensures airlines are compensated for both weight and space used.
